How to Add Stone to the Exterior of a House | Home Guides. Installing stone veneer on your home's exterior can improve the appearance. When humans first started building permanent structures, stone was a common material used in these structures because it's extremely durable and widely available in most locations. Many people still prefer the look of stone on their homes, because it provides a natural, classic appearance to the house. If you want to incorporate stone into your home's exterior, you can do so using stone veneer. This is concrete cast in a mold to resemble natural stone, but has a flat edge on the back that allows it to be placed directly against the side of your home, held in place with mortar. Cover the exterior walls with a waterproof underlayment. Install the underlayment from the base of the wall to the top, and overlap edges of different sheets by 3 inches to prevent leaks. Clean the back of the veneer stones with a power washer. Mix a batch of mortar using two parts washed sand to one part Portland cement. Add water to the mortar mix and stir it for at least 5 minutes until it has the same consistency as mashed potatoes. Spray a brick or stucco wall with water to dampen it (if it has dried from the power washing). If the wall is dry, it will absorb moisture from the mortar, drying it too quickly and causing it to crack. Skip this step if you're applying the veneer to wood sheathing. Brush water onto the back of the first stone you're installing onto the wall with a masonry brush. This prevents the stone from drawing moisture from the mortar. Apply a 1/2- inch layer of mortar to the back of the stone with a trowel. Apply a 1/2- inch layer of mortar to the wall where the first stone is being installed. Begin in one of the lower corners of the wall.) Place the stone against the wall, twisting it slightly as you press it into the mortar on the wall. Apply mortar to the wall and the back of the next stone, using the same process. Place the stone against the wall. The spacing depends on how visible you want the grout lines between the stones to be. Wipe off any mortar that gets on the front of the stones with the trowel before it dries. Continue installing stones until the wall is complete. Finish the first course along the bottom of the wall, and work toward the top of the wall. Cut the stones to fit along the edges of the wall, or around obstructions such as windows, with a wet saw. Wear safety goggles, gloves and ear protection when using the wet saw. Fill the joints between the stones with grout, using a grout bag. Fill the bag about halfway with grout and squeeze the back end, forcing the grout to the front of the bag. Place the tip into the joints between the stones, and squeeze the bag (similar to a cake icing bag). Run over the grout with a joint tool to smooth the surface of the joints. Allow the mortar and grout to set for the time specified on the packaging. Cover the stones with concrete sealer to protect the finish. On a surface this large and uneven, spraying the sealer is the best method. You can rent a machine at an equipment rental facility. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when applying the sealer. Things You Will Need. Waterproof underlayment. Power washer. Washed sand. Portland cement. Masonry brush. Stone veneer. Trowel. Wet saw. Safety goggles. Gloves. Ear protection. Grout. Grout bag. Joint tool. Concrete sealer. Spraying machine. Tips. If you try arranging the stones on the ground before beginning installation, you can speed up the installation process and arrange the stones in a way that is most appealing to you. Number the backs of the stones to keep the order straight. You can install veneer directly over a brick or stucco wall, but if the wall is finished with vinyl, aluminum or wood shingle siding, remove the siding before installing the veneer. Before installing the veneer on brick or stucco, however, wash the walls with a power washer first, and allow them to dry. Follow local building codes when installing the stone veneer. These codes address everything from whether you need to install a vapor barrier in addition to the waterproof underlayment, to what type of veneer you can install. About the Author.
